The Chariot Tarot Card Meaning: Moving Forward With Determination

The Chariot tarot card from the Rider–Waite–Smith deck depicts a crowned warrior standing in a stone chariot beneath a star-covered canopy, with one black and one white sphinx in front, symbolizing willpower, determination, control, and victory.
The Chariot (VII) – Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot (1909). A powerful symbol of willpower, determination, self-discipline, and triumph over obstacles. Illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

The Chariot, card 7 of the Major Arcana. Willpower, focus, and the drive to move forward no matter what pulls you off course.

This post continues our journey through the Major Arcana, one card at a time. If you have not read the Major Arcana overview yet, that is a good place to start before diving into individual cards. So far, The Fool has stepped into the unknown, The Magician has discovered his tools, The High Priestess has taught us to listen within, The Empress has shown us how to nurture growth, The Emperor has built structure that lasts, and The Hierophant has taught us to learn from others. Most recently, The Lovers asked us to make a choice from the heart. Now we arrive at card seven, The Chariot, where that choice turns into action. As always, everything here follows the Rider-Waite tarot.

The Card at a Glance

  • Number: 7
  • Keywords: Willpower, determination, victory, focus, control, momentum, self-discipline
  • Element: Water
  • Reversed Keywords: Lack of direction, loss of control, scattered energy, aggression, obstacles
  • Yes or No: Yes

What You See in the Card

A young warrior stands tall inside a stone chariot, dressed in armor and wearing a crown topped with a star. Crescent moons rest on his shoulders, and a square is marked on his chest. In his right hand, he holds a wand. Above him stretches a blue canopy covered in stars. In front of the chariot sit two sphinxes, one black and one white, facing in slightly different directions. Behind him, a river flows past the walls and towers of a city.

After the open, peaceful garden of The Lovers, The Chariot brings us back into motion. The charioteer has made his choice, and now he is ready to move. At first glance, it looks like a card about winning a battle. Look a little longer, and you start to see it is really a card about self-mastery: the inner strength it takes to keep moving forward when different parts of you want to pull in different directions.

The Symbolism, Piece by Piece

The two sphinxes. The black and white sphinxes are the heart of this card. In Part 5 of my Tarot Symbolism Series on animals, the sphinx speaks to mystery, wisdom, and riddles to be solved. In the language of tarot colors, black and white show opposites: light and dark, positive and negative, logic and emotion. The sphinxes face slightly different directions, as if each wants to go its own way. The charioteer’s task is to keep them moving together.

No reins. Look closely and you will notice the charioteer holds no reins. He guides the sphinxes not with force, but with willpower and focus. This is one of the most important details in the card. True control does not come from pulling harder. It comes from inner discipline and a clear sense of direction.

The armor. In Part 9 of my Tarot Symbolism Series on clothing, armor speaks to protection and readiness. The charioteer is prepared for whatever lies ahead. His armor also suggests the need to protect ourselves as we move toward our goals, especially when the road gets difficult.

The crescent moons. The crescent moons on his shoulders connect The Chariot to Cancer, the zodiac sign it is linked with, which is ruled by the Moon. In Part 8 of my Tarot Symbolism Series on celestial symbols, the moon speaks to emotion and intuition. The charioteer may look tough on the outside, but beneath his armor are deep feelings he has learned to manage.

The star crown and starry canopy. The star on his crown and the canopy of stars above him show that his journey is guided and supported by higher forces. His victory is not just earthly. He moves forward under the protection of the heavens.

The square on his chest. The square represents the earth, stability, and the solid foundation of willpower. It echoes the structure of The Emperor. The charioteer has learned discipline, and now he carries it with him.

The wand. The wand in his hand recalls The Magician’s tools. It represents will, direction, and the power to make things happen. The charioteer uses it not to strike, but to guide.

The city and river. Behind the chariot, the city represents the safety and comfort he is leaving behind. The river represents the flow of emotion and the movement of life. He has crossed the water and is now heading out into the world to meet his goals.

Why Seven Matters: The Numerology of The Chariot

In Part 1 of my Tarot Symbolism Series on numerology, the number seven carries the energy of reflection, spirituality, assessment, and inner knowledge. Seven is often seen as a mystical number. There are seven days in a week, seven colors in the rainbow, and seven notes in a musical scale.

At first, it may seem surprising that such a spiritual number belongs to a card so focused on action. But The Chariot’s victory is not only an outward one. It comes from inner work: understanding yourself, managing your emotions, and staying true to your purpose. In the Minor Arcana, the Sevens often speak of challenges, perseverance, and taking stock of where you stand. The Chariot shows what happens when that inner reflection turns into confident forward movement.

The Chariot also completes the first stage of The Fool’s Journey. Cards one through seven focus on learning about the outer world and finding our place in it. With The Chariot, The Fool has gathered his tools, learned his lessons, made his choice, and now rides out to prove himself.

The Chariot Upright

When The Chariot appears upright in a reading, it is time to move forward with confidence and focus. This card encourages you to set a clear goal, commit to it, and keep going even when obstacles appear. It speaks to victory earned through determination and hard work.

The Chariot is permission to go after what you want. If you have been hesitating or waiting for the perfect moment, this card says the time is now. But it also comes with a reminder: you will need to stay focused. Distractions, doubts, and competing priorities may try to pull you off course. Your success depends on keeping them all moving in the same direction.

The Chariot can also point to travel, a move, or a literal journey, especially one taken with a clear purpose.

The Chariot Reversed

Reversed, The Chariot’s energy tends to show up in one of two ways, and your intuition along with the surrounding cards will help you sense which one applies. If you are still getting comfortable with reversals, my post on reading both sides of the card is a good companion to this section.

The first is a lack of direction. This is the charioteer whose sphinxes have wandered off in different directions. It can point to feeling scattered, unmotivated, or stuck, without a clear goal to move toward. You may be pulled between too many choices or unable to commit to one path. The reversed Chariot often asks, “Where are you really trying to go?”

The second is too much force. This is the charioteer who tries to control everything through sheer aggression. It can point to pushing too hard, bulldozing over others, or trying to win at any cost. Sometimes it signals frustration when things are not moving as quickly as you want. It is a reminder that true control comes from balance, not force.

The Chariot in Love, Career, and Finances

Love

For someone single, The Chariot encourages you to take initiative and go after the connection you want. It may also suggest focusing on your own goals for now, which can lead you to the right person along the way. In an existing relationship, it points to working through challenges together and moving forward as a team. Reversed, it can point to power struggles, a relationship pulled in different directions, or one partner trying to control the other.

Career

In career readings, The Chariot is a strong sign of success, achievement, and moving ahead through hard work. It favors ambition, competition, and taking charge of your career path. A promotion, a new opportunity, or a big win may be on the way. Reversed, it may suggest feeling stuck, losing focus, or a lack of direction in your work.

Finances

Financially, The Chariot favors discipline and determination. It encourages you to set clear financial goals and stay committed to them, even when temptations come along. It can point to progress and financial wins earned through focused effort. Reversed, it may caution against impulsive spending, scattered financial plans, or losing control of your budget.

Is The Chariot a Yes or No Card?

Upright, The Chariot is a yes. It is a card of victory and forward movement, and it favors success through focus and determination. Its yes comes with a reminder that you will need to stay committed and keep your eyes on the goal.

Reversed, The Chariot leans toward no, or more accurately, not until you regain your direction. It suggests taking time to get clear on what you want before charging ahead.

When The Chariot Shows Up in Your Reading

Because The Chariot is a Major Arcana card, its appearance signals that willpower, focus, and forward movement are playing an important role in your situation. Pay attention to where it lands in a spread. In a past position, it may point to a victory or a time you pushed through a challenge. In a present position, it is time to take control and move forward. In a future or outcome position, success through determination is on its way.

Here are a few questions to sit with when The Chariot comes up for you:

  • What goal am I ready to commit to fully?
  • What parts of me are pulling in different directions?
  • Am I guiding my life with focus, or trying to control it with force?
  • What distractions do I need to set aside to move forward?

Final Thoughts

The Chariot reminds us that victory begins within. After The Lovers helps us choose our path, The Chariot gives us the courage and discipline to follow it. The charioteer does not win by pulling harder on the reins. He wins by knowing exactly where he is going and bringing every part of himself along for the ride. When this card appears, it invites you to take the driver’s seat, stay focused, and move forward with confidence.
